Bond Life Sciences Center Atrium
Round the Shore a Million Stood is permanently installed in the atrium of the Bond Life Sciences Center on the campus of the University of Missouri-Columbia.
Round the Shore a Million Stood is based on the harmony in Sonata K162 by the baroque composer Domenico Scarlatti. The painting tracks the harmony in the sonata from left to right as it would be performed over time. However, there is an added layer of meaning woven into the colors of the sonata. Just as music unfolds as a sequence of sounds over time, stories unfold as a series of events, and landscapes extend as stacked horizon lines. The enhanced color scheme of the painting reflects a scene in The Wanderings of Oisin by William Butler Yeats.
Oisin, a human king, is taken from the shores of Ireland by Niamh, an immortal fey, on a horse that can ride over sea-foam. As they approach the shore of her homeland from the waves in the sea, they view the limbs of trees gradually rising from the water, covered with thousands of colorful songbirds. Divided the into thirds, the first section is seafoam on the shallowing sea, the second, the shoreline and shadows, the final, the bright wings of the birds in the sky.
