Moon and Morning Star

Moon and Morning Star is based on the Irish fiddle tune Cooley's Reel. The painting was used for a carpet design along with a companion work, Solar Prominence.

Cooley's Reel, like other fiddle tunes, has evolved as it has been shared by ear over time. In fact, The Session, a huge online community for traditional Irish music, provides 12 alternative titles, 24 settings, and 192 recordings of the tune. The mode of the tune contributes to the way the harmonies flash between major chords and minor chords very quickly. Moon and Morning Star depicts a conjunction of the Moon and Venus in the night sky.
