Under the Wing of the Small Magellanic Cloud

A performance of Sonata K208 by Alexandre Tharaud

A brief statement on Under the Wing of the Small Magellanic Cloud
This painting represents the first half of sonata K208. It takes on the coloring of a NASA Image of our closest neighboring galaxy, the Small Magellanic Cloud, which appears to viewers from the perspective on Earth to be hovering protectively over a stellar nursery. It is painted with sponges and Pan Pastels rather than densely pigmented sticks, giving the impression more of a fragile drawing than a painting. The nursery is the very detailed center part of the grid, densely packed with stars. The relatively complex notation is tightly focused on relating the actual harmonic structure of the musical composition with the location of the stars in the galaxy.
