A performance of Domenico Scarlatti’s Sonata K296 by Orion Weiss
A Brief Statement on Wolf Kahn’s Spring
Wolf Kahn’s Spring incorporates the colors of particular pastel painting by Wolf Kahn, an important pastel painter and member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He is known for his work on landscapes, which he describes as approaching from the traditions of color field painting as well as realism. The work I chose to use felt to me like the climate in springtime. I made the choice to work the colors of the painting into the sonata because the music has an icy, high introduction but is warmly colored to me. This suggests to me spring – with its bracing cold, dark wet magenta tree limbs, and the warm energy of budding leaves and flowers.
